Ringworm Treatment

Early recognition and treatment are needed to slow the spread of infection and to prevent re-infection. Putting off treatment will allow the ringworm to grow and spread and it will take longer to completely eliminate.

Ringworm symptoms usually disappear quickly with treatment, but the treatment should be continued for two to four weeks to eliminate all of the fungus. You should continue treatment until all of the ringworm is gone. If you stop too early it will come back, and may be harder to get rid of.

Topical treatment is used for ringworm of the skin, body or feet. It includes over-the-counter antifungal creams and powders, lotions or sprays.

Scalp ringworm is a major cause of hair loss, and should be treated as early as possible and aggressively. When ringworm is found in the nails or on the scalp the infection is much more difficult to eliminate. Prolonged treatment with a prescription oral antifungal medicine (as well as other topical medicines) is usually necessary. A severe or persistent infection may require treatment by a doctor. Antifungal pills may be given and are necessary if your hair is infected. If ringworm is severe or doesn't respond to over the counter medicine, you may need a prescription strength topical or oral medication.

Prescription antifungal skin medications, such as ketoconazole, are stronger than over-the-counter products and may be needed. Antibiotics may also be needed to treat related bacterial infections. If you developed ringworm from your pet, your pet should be treated as well.

Continual reinfection can be due to decreased natural skin resistance to fungi, continual reinfection from the environment or it may be a sign of undiagnosed diabetes, immunodeficiency, or other medical problems and should be referred to a physician.
